HOW I BECAME A PRIVATE PHOTO EDITOR….

So, a little back story about me and how I became a private photo editor.

 

I was introduced to the magic of Photography back when my first child was about 2 years old (around 2006) and got her first real professional pictures outside of the target or sears studio.  I was mesmerized by how beautiful she looked in our pictures and, you guys, I wanted a camera that could give me a “blurry background” just like the background in our pics.  Yep, you heard me right, I didn’t even know a thing about bokeh, aperture, lenses, focal length, ISO, light, etc…  I just knew I LOVED the images and I just had to be able to produce this myself….

 

So, I poured my heart into learning it all, practicing like crazy, and ultimately grew a successful photography business of 14+ years.  It was a dream.

 

Now fast forward to the year 2016.

 

This was the year that I decided to pivot from photography to private photo editing.

 

So, what inspired this big pivot?

 

 

“I recognized this need in our photography industry for not only outsourcing, but for a more personalized approach to outsourcing our editing.” 

Well, to be honest it was one of those middle of the night experiences, where I woke up at around 3:00am, and it hit me as clear as ever that I needed to start offering editing to other photographers.  I saw this HUGE need for a more personal, one-on-one approach, to outsourcing photo editing and I immediately knew that this was the perfect fit for me to become a private photo editor!  We all know how much time it takes to edit… A LOT, as in I dare you to get real and add up those numbers… and that I could use my skills and love for editing to ultimately give the gift of time back to other photographers.

 

At this early morning revelation, I recognized this need in our photography industry for not only outsourcing, but for a more personalized approach to outsourcing our editing.  I knew the missing link was that 1-on-1, editor to photographer, that is vital when it comes to matching a photographers editing style.  And I knew I could fill that missing link!

 

I didn’t even know that editing for other photographers was even a thing, so I took to my computer and researched and built out a business plan and started reaching out to some photographer friends of mine to see if this is something they would be interested in having me edit their images for them.

 

 

I started off editing for senior and wedding photographers and doing all their editing work, but quickly realized that I wanted to niche down to weddings.  And that’s just what I did.  There is something about weddings that just speak to my soul!  I don’t know if it’s that I’m a sucker for all those beautiful details, or if it’s because after my second little girl was born, I made the hard decision to no longer photograph my own weddings.  Whatever the reason was, I knew that editing weddings was what I wanted to do…

 

…And the rest was history….

 

Okay, it wasn’t that easy so, let’s rephrase this, a lot of hard work, blood, sweat, and tears went into this and building Janelle Joy Private Photo Editing to where it is today.  Due to the high demand and success of my private photo editing business, I’m so proud to say that what started as a one women show, me, has now grown into a team of 7 dynamic one-on-one private photo editors.  You guys, this was all within a 1.5 years of the day I opened the doors to private photo editing.  Talk about some serious validation in knowing I made the right decision to do this and become a private photo editor!

 

It’s seriously the BEST JOB in the world.  My team and I get to see weddings from all over the world and watch as outsourcing transforms out photographer’s lives.  It’s truly rewarding when we hear phrases such as, “I don’t know how I ever did this without you!”  or “Because of you, I am now able to spend more time with my new baby!” And one of my favorite responses.. “I can’t believe you matched my editing and it looks just like I did it on my own!”

 

I am so grateful for all of our clients and I regularly let them know how much I love them and love being a part of the magic they create.  It’s the most rewarding job and God knew, all these years ago, that I was being prepped for this and knowing that my editing skills and now my teams, would let me serve and love on all of our photographers.
